Herewith a few updates on recent events and activities and notice of the forthcoming Annual Allotment Competition.
Plot Inspections
Plot inspections were conducted on 29 March along with a general site assessment.
It was quite apparent to those involved in the inspections that great progress was being made across the site as we move into the growing season and the committee would like to extend a big thank you to those members who took the extra time to repair the track and fencing.
Provisional dates have been posted to the notice boards for future inspections and guidance notes as to what is expected are included under Rules on the Web-Site
It is important for us as a committee to stress that; If, at any time, you are having difficulty cultivating your allotment, such as a prolonged illness or other extenuating circumstances, do let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs and help. Simply speak to a member of the committee or drop us an email so we are aware of your situation.
Site Guidance
Site Speed Limit:
There is a very generous 10 MPH speed limit that applies whilst on site.
This is the absolute maximum speed which should never be exceeded.
Small children are often on site who are both easily hidden by obstructions and most vulnerable to accidents. It would be a tragedy if anyone, not just a child, were injured on site by the selfish act of an individual trying to save a few seconds in time.
The dry weather also means that much dust is created from car wheels traversing the track even at very low speed which spoils everybody’s enjoyment.
The committee have the full power of the Association to do anything necessary to further its objectives and we take a very dim view of members who are reported speeding.
Fires:
Whilst fires are allowed, excessive smoke is a nuisance not only to other plot holders but also our neighbours.
Please try to set fires late in the day when fewer people are about and then only when the wind is blowing across and not down the length of the site. Never leave large fires unattended.
First Aid Kits:
The committee have purchased and deposited first aid kits for the use of members. They are hanging on the inside of the wooden sheds on Plots 19 and 81.
If you have need of the contents, please let a committee member know after the event what has been used so that it can be replaced.
Competition – How does my Garden Grow?
Have you ever wondered how well you are progressing as a gardener? Or, would you like an impartial view of areas that need improving on your plot? Or, are you simply competitive?
The week of 23 June could be the time to find out.
All you have to do is enter your allotment in a category of the annual Watnall Allotments competition and let the judges decide.
In return for your entry, the judges will visit your plot and score your efforts based upon quality of veg, fruit, flowers and plants, layout and design, condition and other visual aspects.
There are different categories based on plot size and eligibility that include;
Best Allotment
Intermediate Allotment
Best Half Plot
and
New Member Most Progress
At this time the provisional date for the judging is Tuesday 24 June so you have plenty of time to get things as you would like.
More details regarding eligibility and the scoring criteria are on the Web-Site If you would like to take part, you can register by email at watnallallotments@gmail.com, giving your name and plot number, or by contacting one of the committee. You can also leave a note on our Facebook page.
