Annual Produce Show and Fun Day,  Monday 26th August 2019

Watnall Allotments and Gardens Association held its Annual Show on August Bank Holiday Monday and this year for the first time it was held in the WI Hall, Main Road, Watnall.

Entries for the vegetable, fruit and flower classes were judged by Mr. John Harrison and the domestic classes were judged by the President of Watnall WI, Mrs. Joyce Widdowson and Mrs Melanie Clay, another WI member. A Show Guide listing all the classes is available here.

And here for the list of 2019 trophy winners.

The show was open to the public in the afternoon, with the sales of cream teas and presentation of awards by the Chair of Greasley Parish Council Cllr. Mrs June Layton. The winner of the most points in show was Mr. Bryan Warhurst, who also won the most points in the vegetable classes and best exhibit in the show. Mrs. Lyn Barwick won the most points in the domestic classes.

A new addition to the show this year was a Fun Day, a community event held on the Allotments site on Main Road during the morning whilst the show entries were judged. Local residents, allotment holders, their friends and families visited the site to explore the plots of some of the winners  of the various allotment competitions, buy plants and produce donated by allotment members, enjoy a BBQ and take part in the scarecrow competition, 'I Spy' and 'guess the weed' quizzes.

The Chairman of the Allotment Association , Mr. Andy Gillaspy unveiled and dedicated a bench for the Honorary Life Members of the Association, of which there are 5. The bench was provided by the Association and a donation from Mr. Ron Beeson an Honorary member who retired last year having been an allotment member since 1947.

The Show and Fun Day was sponsored by the Fernwood Group, Gillotts Funeral Directors, Watson's Estate Agents and The White Lion at Swingate. Local shops and businesses provided raffle prizes.
